New SEER Minimums Beginning 1-1-2015

The United States Department of Energy has issued new regulations regarding the minimum standards for central AC systems and heat pumps. These regulations have taken effect as of January 1, 2015 and state that in 15 southern states where temperatures are often warmer will now have an increased minimum SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio). The SEER is now a minimum of 14 from the previous minimum of 13. Utah is listed in the northern region along with 30 other states whose SEER currently is and will remain at 13.

Heat Pump Regulations

For Heat pumps the new regulations are nationwide. ALL new central heat pumps will be required to meet a minimum 14 SEER and 8.0-8.2 HSPF (heating seasonal performance factor). This new minimum has been raised from the previous minimum of 13 SEER with no minimum HSPF.

“Manufactures can no longer manufacture 13 SEER heating pumps after January 1st 2015” Says Barkley Gause, a local heating and air distributor. “However, according to the new regulation there will be a ‘grace period’ which is afforded to manufacturers and distributors of 18 months after the January 2015 start date. They will have until July 1, 2016 where any remaining inventory of 13 SEER equipment can be installed, but only as supply lasts.”
